Christine McVie was one of many deaths that the music world suffered in 2022. Her voice and songwriting was always so pure, rising above the tension of the many relationships that fueled the fire of Fleetwood Mac.
Last night, Mick Fleetwood, along with Sheryl Crow and Bonnie Raitt performed a tribute to Christine Perfect McVie at the Grammy awards by giving us rendition of her beautiful song, SONGBIRD.
What made it so poignant was the combination of Crow and Raitt’s voices, but most importantly the talking drum by Mick Fleetwood. Mick Fleetwood is a monster drummer, one of the greatest in my opinion, and very underrated. He and John McVie anchored all the many incarnations of what was known as Fleetwood Mac. From the blues intensity of Peter Green, to the soft rock foundation of Kiln House, to the ethereal songs of Bob Welch, and finally to the penultimate mid-Seventies version with Lindsay Buckingam and Stevie Nicks and of course Christine McVie.

Mick Fleetwood played the talking drum, and it talked. It told a story of his heart and his love, and the song finished with him solo on the talking drum, tapping out the heartbeat. And when he stopped playing, it was like her heart stopped playing, and tears came down my face.
It was an incredibly touching moment.
SONGBIRD
For you, there'll be no more crying
For you, the sun will be shining
And I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right
To you, I'll give the world
To you, I'll never be cold
'Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right
And the songbirds are singing,
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before
And I wish you all the love in the world
But most of all, I wish it from myself
And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before, like never before,
Like never before
